Proverbs: God's Wisdom for Daily Living
Devotional Scripture:
4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.
5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.
Thought for the Day
Verses 6-8 - Today's message is a warning to the sluggard, who uses excessive sleep as an escape from responsibility. Sluggard and sluggish come from the same root word, meaning to be slow. A sluggard is a habitually lazy person who dislikes work. He does not provide well for his household.
We are told to be wise like the ant, one of God's hardest-working creatures. Without a supervisor, ants work hard. Some people only work when they have to. Ants gather food in the summer and harvest season, so that when winter arrives they have plenty to eat. We all experience "summer seasons" of plenty in life during which we should diligently save so that we may have plenty in "winter seasons" of lack. The old saying "make hay while the sun shines," fits with these verses.
Verses 9-10 - Here we are given an idea of what the Holy Spirit might say to a lazy person: "How long will you sleep? When are you going to get up and go to work?" and an idea of how the devil might tempt him: "Just a little more slumber; fold your hands, rest on your pillow and go to sleep." Let us wake up and get to work! There are things to be done in life; things we need to do for our families, and things waiting to be done for the Lord. Let us ask God for His strength to do them. Jesus declared that He must do the work of His Father, and went about doing good (John 9:4, Acts 10:38). Let us also be about His business.
Verse 11 – Indolence leads to poverty. Poverty, like a traveler making his way on foot, comes slowly, but surely. The sluggard may live for a while without seeing the results of his laziness, especially if he has inherited wealth. However, like a robber who has marked out the house of a rich man, poverty will suddenly strike, depriving the sluggard of luxuries and necessities alike. The Bible teaches us that we are to all work. We are to provide for ourselves and our families so that we may be able to eat. "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work neither should he eat" (2 Thessalonians 3:10).
